Dr. Halm appointed Dean of College of Medicine at Des Moines University

April, 2019 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP, HPF has been appointed dean of the medical school at Des Moines University effective July 2019 .  DMUCOM is nationally recognized as a leading educator of primary care physicians in the US (see American Academy of Family Practice and US News Report 2023).  Dr. Halm will lead the faculty, staff, and students at the second oldest osteopathic medical school in the US.  The college is accredited by the US Department of Education through the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).  

Dr. Halm brings his twenty-five years of dual specialty experience, inpatient and outpatient management, hospital medial staff leadership experience, and his more recent medical education and simulation medicine experience to this position.  He is also a graduate of the Harvard Institute for Medical Simulation and a member of the AACOM/Ohio University Health Policy Fellowship Class of 2018.  Dr. Halm remains board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics, and the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Halm Becomes Fellow of the American College of Physicians

September, 2014 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP, Associate Professor of Clinical Sciences and Medical Director of the Clinical Evaluation Center (Simulation Center) at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine has been recognized as a physician of DrHalmdistinction in the field of Internal Medicine by being selected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).

The American College of Physicians (ACP) is a national organization of internists, both MDs and DOs, that are medical specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness.  The ACP is the largest medical-specialty organization in the United States with 137,000 members.

Fellowship in the organization is a mark of distinction representing the pinnacle of integrity, professionalism, and scholarship for those that pursue careers in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Halm is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), a similar distinction for the specialty of Pediatrics in the United States. 

Returning to North Carolina


July, 2015 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP will return to his native state in his appointment as the Chair of Simulation Medicine at Campbell University's new medical school (est. 2013).  Dr. Halm left 20 years of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics practice in NC in 2013 to oversee the medical content of simulation education at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine as the Medical Director of their simulation center.

In his newest role he will oversee the simulation lab services and  all simulation integration into the healthcare education curriculum. He has been appointed as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and will start in August, 2015.

Dr. Halm Recertified by American Board of Internal Medicine
January 2016 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP has completed the recertification process (his third) by the American Board of Internal Medicine.  His new certification status is good for 10 years.  Dr. Halm is also board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Halm to Head Growing National Leadership Program in Medicine
February, 2016 - After co-founding a leadership development program for medical students and resident physicians, Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP will continue with the PaLMS (Professionalism and Leadership in the Medical Setting) program as the CEO of the newly formed company (Advanced Leadership, LLC).   The program is devised around his medical leadership experiences and the leadership theories based on Jim Anderson's 2013 book Principle-Based Leadership: Driving Your Success as a Leader.  Dr. Halm, author Jim Anderson and two medical students from WVSOM piloted the program in 2014 with 30 students completing four 2-hour sessions providing practical medical case studies.  In 2015, there were 80 graduates, and at Campbell University School of Medicine 164 completed the program in early 2016.  150 students are expected to complete the program later this year. 

"We are getting interest from other medical and nursing schools throughout the country.  This is a unique  'practitioner-based leadership program' that provides practical background for what residents and young attendings will face in their early careers in medicine.".

April 2016 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP has been appointed as the Assistant Dean for Simulation Medicine at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine.  Dr. Halm has been at Campbell since August 2015 when he joined the faculty as an Associate Professor in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and the Chair of the Simulation Medicine Department.

Dr. Halm Presents at National and International Conferences

2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP NRHA Preshas presented on dozens of topics annually at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare, the Natioanl Rural Health Association Annual Conference, and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) Annual Conferences.  Topics have included Interprofessional Education (IPE) activities he's helped develop, studies and applications of simulation to medical education, debriefing techniques in medical simulation,  as well as professionalism and leadership in the healthcare.
 

Dr. Halm Recertified by the American Board of Pediatrics

January, 2018 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP has completed board recertification by the American Board of Pediatrics.  He has been board certified in pediatrics since 1993 and has successfully recertified in this specialty three times throughout his career.  He also has maintained board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine throughout his 25-year career.  Recertification requires completion of a formal examination that tests medical knowledge and clinical application of to a medical specialty, as well maintaining other professionalism standards.  A very small percentage of specialist maintain certification in two spearate specialty boards.

Selected as "Attending of the Year" at Campbell University's Student-run Free Clinic

April, 2018 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP spends most of his Tuesday evenings as the faculty advisor and attending physician serving the area's uninsured through Campbell University's Student-run Free Clinic.   In February, he was chosen by his students as the first "Attending of the Year" and honored at the free clinic's first annual Gala, in which students helpded raise over $12,000 to support full primary care and pharmacy students for those in need.  Dr. Halm has assisted in securing grants totalling $116,000 from the NC Department of Health and Human Services and acts as the primary investigator for the 2018-19 grant of $80,000.  All proceeds are used to support service to patients in Harnett County that lack Medicaid, Medicare or any sort of private health insurance coverage.  The clinic currently has over 300 active patients and provides full service primary care, a fully staffed "no co-pay" pharmacy, and referal services to specialists that provide their services at no cost to the patient. Dr. Halm has been involved in free clinic services throughout his career.

Completes One-Year National Health Policy Fellowship

June, 2018 - Steven J. Halm, DO, FAAP, FACP has completed a year-long program on health policy through Ohio University and AACOM.  The program involved in-depth discussions and presentations from national leaders on health systems, the role of  state and federal government in health policy, vulnerable populations, healthcare workforce issues, rural health, and  poitics of healthcare reform.  Sessions were held in Washington, DC, Chicago, IL, and at numerous medical schools across the US.  Dr. Halm was one of 12 physicians chosen nationally to participate in the program's 22nd year.  The Health Policy Fellowship has provided an excellent framework and perspective for over 20 deans and presidents of US osteopathic medical schools that have graduated from the program.

Simulation Medicine provides a way of reducing errors in hospitals and clinics; it allows team members to learn and improve their communication skills in focusing on "patient-centric" healthcare.
